Welcome to Greystoke Pool

pool evening

Our heated open air swimming pool is situated in the heart of the picturesque village of Greystoke.

The water is heated by air source heat pumps and the water temperature is usually around 27c depending on the air temperature. The pool offers:

  • dolphin slide
  • separate toddler pool
  • café
  • showers
  • changing rooms
  • toilets
  • adjoining play area and playing field.
  • lifeguard on duty during all public opening hours.

Greystoke and District District Sports Association is a charity that is managed by a committee of Trustees made up entirely of local volunteers. The local facilities are an open-air swimming pool, a football playing field and two children’s play areas.

With the exception of the swimming pool the other facilities are used the entire year round by the local school, the village football team, youth groups, members of the local community as well as numerous visitors to the area.

The open-air swimming pool opens May to September and offers customers of all ages a safe, relaxing and enjoyable swimming facility in beautiful surroundings on the fringe of the Lake District National Park.

Fundraising for New Buildings

The pool has long needed a major and much needed refurbishment of the buildings which were developed in 1973. We started consulting on potential new improvements in 2018. There was clear and strong support in the community to see:

  • Much improved changing rooms and showers
  • A new cafe and kitchen looking out onto the play area.

The plans by Ashwood Design were submitted to Eden District Council in August 2018 and planning approval was granted in November.

The total cost of the project is around £150,000. We have been fortunate enough to be successful in a £94,000 grant application towards the costs from a major grant from the Cumbria Fells & Dales LEADER programme. This programme is supported by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and covers the period 2014 to 2020.

The Sport Association appreciates all the support it received in our grant application from the local community, local business and local groups. The grant makes possible the delivery of this really important project which ensures this vital community facility can be improved and made sustainable for the long term.

We will be going out to tender for the work this spring, with the aim of starting on site at the end of the coming season, with the spanking new facilities ready for the 2020 season.

Covid-19 Update #3

Dear pool users

We are of course aware of the Government’s announcement yesterday that open air pools can now legally open from this Saturday 11th. However, as a Committee we had already made the decision not to open this year and, sadly, this last minute announcement does not change anything.

We have some work to remedy cracks in the pool planned for next week and then it would take up to three weeks to get the pool up and running. It would not be financially viable for us to open for a few weeks in August, with all the work that is needed to open and all the safety measures that would need to be put in place. Also due to Covid-19, as with other open air pools locally, we have been unable to train the lifeguards needed to keep the pool and our customers safe. We are a volunteer led pool and it would not be fair to put our volunteers under the pressures needed to operate safely. The good news is that the childrens play area is now open again.

Meanwhile we are pressing on with painting the outside of the pool buildings and preparing for a bumper season in 2021.

Thank you for your understanding through this difficult year and we look forward to welcoming you back next year.

Covid-19 Update #2

Dear pool user

The Greystoke pool committee has continued to keep a close eye on the implications of Covid-19 for opening this summer. Currently, government regulations still do not allow swimming pools to open.

We anticipate any future regulations that allow opening but with social distancing would be very difficult to manage safely and so, like Lazonby and Shap, we do not expect the pool to be open for general use this year.

For now the play area also has to remain closed, but we will keep this under review.

We will be keeping the guidelines under review in case it becomes possible to open the pool in a limited way.

We are going to take this period as an opportunity to press ahead with pool maintenance and completing the refurbishment project (especially the re-painting of the exterior walls) now that regulations on meeting outdoors have eased. Please note, we will be filling the pool later this summer to test the systems and to allow us to install a new chemical dosing system.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Covid-19 Update #1

Dear pool user,

Due to government restrictions as a result of Covid-19, it is very unlikely that we will be able to open the swimming pool as planned in early May. This is a great shame as we are keen that you can all experience our new facilities and enjoy our wonderful pool.

For now, we are therefore not offering season tickets for 2020 on sale and also we are not taking bookings for the pool.

We will of course open the pool as soon as is practically possible. To keep updated please check this web site and also our Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/greystokepool

Take care and we sincerely hope that we will be able to welcome you to Greystoke Pool soon.
